A Simpler PageSpeed Insights Alternative for Non-Technical Owners
Google PageSpeed Insights (PSI) is the closest thing to an official verdict on your website's speed — it's free, it's from Google, and its scores feed directly into how Google ranks you. So why would anyone want an alternative? Because for a non-technical business owner, PSI answers a question you didn't ask ("what are your Lighthouse audit results?") and skips the one you did ("so what do I actually do?"). Here's an honest look at the gap, and a friendlier way to close it.
First, credit where it's due
PageSpeed Insights is genuinely authoritative. It runs Google's Lighthouse engine, it shows both lab data and real-world Core Web Vitals from actual Chrome users, and it's free with no limits. If you want the definitive number Google itself sees, PSI is it. We're not going to pretend otherwise — in fact, AuditStack runs the very same PageSpeed engine under the hood. The data isn't the issue. What you're left to do with it is.
Where PageSpeed Insights loses non-technical owners
Run your site through PSI and you'll typically hit three walls:
- The language is built for developers. "Largest Contentful Paint," "Total Blocking Time," "Eliminate render-blocking resources." Every term is precise and every term assumes you already know what it means. For most owners, it reads like a foreign language.
- There's no priority and no plan. PSI shows a score and a list of opportunities, but not which one matters most for your business or what to change first. If you're not technical, you can't tell the 2-minute fix from the 2-day one.
- It's a snapshot, not something you keep. You get a page of results in the browser. There's no plain-English report to save, revisit, or hand to someone.
If you can read Lighthouse output fluently, none of that is a problem. If you can't, PSI has technically answered you while leaving you no closer to a faster site.
The friendlier alternative: AuditStack
AuditStack is built to be the translation layer on top of that same Google data:
- Same engine, plain English. We run Google's PageSpeed engine — so the underlying scores match what Google sees — then translate every result into what it means for your business, with no jargon. If you want the background, here's what a good PageSpeed score actually is and why your site might be slow.
- A prioritised action plan. Instead of a flat list, you get your issues ordered by impact — fix number one and you move your score (and your customers-who-stay) the most.
- Fixes written for your platform. Step-by-step guidance aimed at a non-technical owner, ready to hand straight to a developer if you'd prefer.
- Security in the same scan. PSI is speed-only. AuditStack also checks your site's security basics — SSL, headers, email-spoofing protection — because speed and security problems often share the same root cause.
- A report you keep. Your results are emailed to you, not just flashed on screen once.
It's free to run, takes about a minute, and needs no signup or card.
When you should just use PageSpeed Insights directly
To be straight with you: if you're technical, or you have a developer, use PSI directly — it's free, it's the source of truth, and you don't need a translation layer. You'll happily read the Lighthouse audits and know exactly what to do. AuditStack wouldn't add much for you.
AuditStack earns its place for the owner who looks at a PSI report, recognises none of the terms, and thinks "…okay, but what am I supposed to change?" That translation — from Google's raw verdict to a clear, prioritised, plain-English plan — is the whole point.
The honest summary
- Want Google's raw, authoritative Lighthouse data? PageSpeed Insights (and AuditStack uses it too).
- Not technical and want to know what to actually do? AuditStack.
- Speed only? PSI is perfect.
- Speed and security, in plain English, in one report? AuditStack.
Same data, different reader. If Google's own tool has ever left you none the wiser, that's not you failing to understand it — it just wasn't written for you.
